Sussex racer Will Hunt has been invited to participate in a Porsche test day at Donington Park (Thursday 10 December).
The Motorsport UK Academy Squad driver will be put through his paces in a Simon Green Motorsport-prepared Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, which has campaigned in the Porsche Sprint Challenge Great Britain.
Porsche has a rich sporting heritage and in 60 years of motor racing has achieved more than 32,000 victories, including a record 19 outright wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Porsche Sprint Challenge GB, launched in 2020, is a one-make category where both amateur and professional drivers race identical Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsports in two competitive classes – Pro and Am – that have their own points structure and championship table.
The series serves as an entry point to the ‘Porsche Motorsport pyramid’, which is made up of domestic Porsche Carrera Cups, the Formula 1-supporting Porsche Supercup and international GTE programmes that include the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Sprint Challenge GB calendar encompasses six rounds at the UK’s most esteemed circuits, including Brands Hatch, Donington Park and Silverstone, and placings on the high-profile British GT and British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) support bills provide outstanding commercial exposure for drivers and their sponsors.
For Hunt, the Porsche Motorsport GB test with SGM is a tantalising prospect, and the Abruzzi Racewear Brand Ambassador is fully aware that the experience could be pivotal in determining the direction of his burgeoning motorsport career.
“To be invited to a Porsche test day is incredibly exciting, and I’m thankful to Simon Green Motorsport for the opportunity,” said Hunt. “I’m at the point where I’m assessing my options and planning for the next stage of my career, and a campaign in the Porsche Sprint Challenge is certainly an interesting proposition, especially as I would follow FIA World Endurance Champions and 24 Hours of Le Mans winners Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber onto the Porsche Motorsport pyramid. I expect the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport to be quite different from my Radical SR1 but I’m confident I can get a feel for the car and demonstrate my true potential during the Donington Park test.
“Of course, I will need the help of sponsors and partners to progress up the motorsport ladder, and one of the Porsche Sprint Challenge’s strengths is that it provides a very high-profile platform on which to raise awareness and increase reach and engagement, in addition to the measurable and sustainable business development opportunities I’m able to offer.”
