Richmond racer Oscar Joyce reveals Radical ‘Art Car’ to launch fundraising mission at Donington Park

London racing driver Oscar Joyce will set off on his mission to raise funds for inner-city charities when he takes his graffitied Radical SR3 XXR out into the opening round of the 2024 Hagerty Radical Cup UK at Donington Park (27-28 April).
 

Graffiti artists Solo One, OG Mear and D_a_n_e_ism spraypainted Joyce’s DW Racing-prepared Radical sportscar and a selection of race helmets at Stockwell Hall of Fame, London on Monday 15 April.

The objective is to create the most photographed car in UK motorsport as Joyce – the “professional doodler” at the centre of Apex Doodles – launches into his second season in Radicals.

As the super competitive sports-prototype series holds a coveted spot on the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) support bill, Joyce and his luridly-painted ‘Art Car’ will be showcased in full view of 40,000-plus trackside spectators and the millions who tune in to ITV4 and ITV4HD’s live coverage of the Donington Park curtain-raiser.

However, the graffiti street artists also collaborated with Apex Doodles to design a unique selection of Arai race helmets.

Each will be displayed and raffled at the DW Racing awning in the support paddock and online throughout the season to raise money for local charities associated with the painters, including Stockwell Hall of Fame and the Dwaynamics ABC Boxing Gym.

The Stockwell Hall of Fame, originally a 1950s brutalist communal ball court, has become renowned and respected within the global street art scene and was one of several projects to benefit from ring-fenced funds for reinvestment back into the community.

Local graffiti artist and educator, Boyd Hill, now works with schools and community groups, runs classes on graffiti art and after-school clubs at the space, all with the view of increasing young people’s engagement in learning and their involvement in their local community.

Dwaynamics ABC, meanwhile, is a boxing club in Brixton that’s designed to steer at-risk young people away from gang-culture, knife crime and gun violence.

The boxing skills passed on by Dwaynamics’ coaches encourage children to commit to something outside of school from a young age, ensuring they remain dedicated to their studies and avoid the temptations of gang culture.

Additional helmet designs and fresh charity partnerships will be launched over the course of the season, and Joyce said: “The money being raised helps communities around Stockwell Hall of Fame and Dwaynamics. It is great to be able to do this as the people involved are such characters and great to work with. It was inspiring to see how the crew of artists worked together and brought their different styles to life, and it motivates me to go out and perform on-track because the car and helmets turn heads.

“Everywhere you look you see different skills, from hand painting and stencilling to freestyle and rapido line art. I hope people love it, share it and we have a chance to raise some serious funds. We certainly bring some character to the track and paddock.”

Joyce added: “I have to thank Arai for donating the helmets. It’s unbelievable how quickly the artists work, and the thought processes they put into the final designs are amazing. We are going to display the helmets at each racetrack in 2024 so everybody has a chance to win their favourite.

“Each one has different characteristics. We have three completed designs and will reveal the rest over the course of the season. I am going to work with the artists on the next helmet during the summer and we will do all the prize draws at the end of the season.”

Looking at his prospects for the forthcoming Radical Cup UK season, Richmond, London-based Joyce said: “Through the off-season I have been doing some sim work and karting to keep me sharp. I feel at ease in the car after testing, as DW Racing has done a great job on the setup. We go out to perform and enjoy ourselves. We’ll simply make it through the first corner of the first race and build on that. However, we want to be in the mix and running at the front to get the best results for the team and myself. It’s going to be a big one!”
