RLR MSport will field a second Ligier JSP3 for Freddie Hunt and Denmark’s Martin Vedel in the Michelin Le Mans Cup ‘Road to Le Mans’ at Circuit de la Sarthe (13-15 June).
Freddie, the son of 1976 Formula 1 World Champion James Hunt, began carving out a motor racing career of his own in 2007, with Formula Ford GB and ADAC Formula Masters campaigns preceding appearances in a wide array of single-seater, one-make ‘tin-top’ and endurance sportscar categories.
Between 2014 and 2018, Hunt dabbled in various forms of motorsport, including the Renault UK Clio Cup, Pirelli World Challenge and NASCAR Euro Series.
Notably, an assault on the 2017 24H Series would yield a race win in the 24 Hours of CotA, and that result would be followed by a highly successful LMP3 debut in the VdeV Endurance Series at Circuito do Estoril, where he finished second in class and sixth overall.
However, a day of testing at Donington Park on Thursday (30 May) enabled Hunt to get acquainted with the RLR MSport-prepared Ligier JSP3, and the Wiltshire racer now feels ready to take on the Le Mans Cup’s blue riband fixture, which holds a coveted spot on the support bill for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
“My ultimate goal is to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and competing in the Michelin Le Mans Cup ‘Road to Le Mans’ race with RLR MSport is really the first step towards achieving that ambition,” said Hunt. “I have yet to drive Circuit de la Sarthe and, after only doing a few laps on the simulator, I’m not too daunted, although it will be a privilege to be part of the support package for such a prestigious race.
“I was looking for the best team and teammate and I had heard very good things about RLR MSport, especially since it won the European Le Mans Series LMP3 title in 2018 – it’s a very professional, well-organised operation with an impressive setup in Lancashire. I believe I will be one of the faster Bronzes and Martin (Vedel) will be one of the quickest Silvers, so I feel we should be at the sharp end of the field at Le Mans if I do my job properly.”
